If you live in Ashton Grove, you probably drive east on W. Rock Creek Road all the time. The Villas at Ashton Grove sit on the east side of 48th Avenue NW, about 490 feet north of Rock Creek, according to a City of Norman council agenda. Rock Creek runs straight to 24th Avenue NW. As of Wednesday, Oct. 28, the southeast corner of that intersection has a Shake Shack with a drive-thru lane and a digital menu board, open until 1 a.m. on weekends.
The corner has been in the news for two years because of the Rock Creek Entertainment District, with its arena and the court fights over how it gets paid for. That project sits right across the road and is still years away. What has changed for Ashton Grove this fall is smaller and much closer. Fast food is filling in Rock Creek and 24th, it's built around the car, and it's here long before the arena.
Two weeks in, here's what's open on the corner
Shake Shack opened at 2335 24th Ave. NW, in the University North Park development, on Oct. 28, 2026. It's Oklahoma's second Shake Shack. The first opened in November 2025 at 2111 NW 50th St. in Oklahoma City's OAK development. Until two weeks ago, the closest Shake Shack to a west Norman driveway was up in north OKC.
The OKC location has no drive-thru. KOKH's report on the opening noted that Norman's store is the first in Oklahoma to include one. The Norman Chronicle added that the lane has a digital menu board and ordering system.
On a weeknight, the hours matter more than the drive-thru:
- Monday through Thursday: 10 a.m. to midnight
- Friday through Sunday: 10 a.m. to 1 a.m.
That's 14 hours a day early in the week and 15 on weekends. You can order a burger and a shake through a car window on Rock Creek Road after a late flight into Will Rogers, after a tournament runs long, or after a late shift.
The drive-thru was a deliberate choice for this spot
The Norman store didn't come together overnight. In August 2025, Norman Development reported that Shake Shack Oklahoma LLC had signed a ground lease with UTC 3 LLC, a subsidiary of University Town Center developer Collette Real Estate. The site was described as the southeast corner of 24th Avenue NW and Rock Creek Road, next to the Young Family Athletic Center. The city issued a $1,185,000 commercial new-construction permit for the site during the week of Feb. 25 through March 3.
The company has explained why it chose this corner. Daphne Horges, Shake Shack's area director for Texas and Oklahoma, told the Norman Transcript that Norman came first "because of the bustling community, the great college nearby, and because it's right in the middle of a huge development." She told the same paper the store is ready for football weekends. "We are prepared for 'Crazy Town,'" she said.
The Oklahoman pointed out that the store opened just ahead of the next OU home game. It also brought on 60 to 80 team members, and the company plans to hand out sample "burger boxes" at nearby hotels and look for a presence on the OU campus, according to the Transcript.
In other words, the store was planned around traffic: hotel guests, gameday crowds, and people heading home on Rock Creek. A drive-thru open past midnight is the clearest sign of that.
The other side of 24th is lined up for the same kind of business
Across 24th Avenue NW from Shake Shack, Chick-fil-A filed a $4.5 million permit application in January 2026 for a restaurant on the southwest corner of Rock Creek Road and 24th Avenue NW. The application covers the building and site work on a 1.25-acre parcel, according to Norman Development. County records show the land is owned by UTC II LLC, an entity tied to Collette Real Estate. That's the same developer whose subsidiary leased Shake Shack its ground across the street.
It would be Chick-fil-A's sixth Norman location. Today the chain has stand-alone restaurants at Main Street and 24th Avenue NW and at Alameda Street and 12th Avenue NE, plus a spot in Sooner Mall and two on the OU campus, in the Oklahoma Memorial Union and Couch Restaurants. For anyone driving from 48th and Rock Creek, the closest of those now is down at Main Street. The proposed site would put one at the same intersection as Shake Shack, on the road you already drive.
With the Shake Shack lease and the Chick-fil-A parcel, one developer now has quick-service food planned on both southern corners of the intersection.
What was already there and still draws the most visits
Shake Shack's neighbor to the south is the Young Family Athletic Center, which has been on the corner much longer. YFAC describes itself as a facility of about 122,000 square feet on a 12-acre site, with basketball and volleyball courts, pools, pickleball, youth leagues and community access.
For an Ashton Grove household with kids in youth leagues, that may have been the main reason to drive to this corner in the first place. Now there's a drive-thru right next to the gym that stays open until midnight on school nights, a few hundred feet from where a tournament lets out.
The big project north of Rock Creek runs on a much longer clock
North of Rock Creek Road is the planned Rock Creek Entertainment District. Its website describes the district as about 269 acres of entertainment, dining, hospitality, residential and public gathering space. The proposed Chick-fil-A site sits directly south of it.
According to the City of Norman's project page, the groundbreaking was held on site on May 12, 2026, with about 250 guests. The district's own site shows construction running through 2026 and 2027, with phased openings projected for 2028.
The project's tax increment financing is still in court. In September, a Cleveland County judge denied a preliminary injunction, and in October, Oklahomans for Responsible Economic Development and 45 local plaintiffs filed two appeals with the Oklahoma Supreme Court, KFOR reported. KFOR's report also says the district will sit near I-35 and Rock Creek Road and is expected to be finished by 2028.
Here's where everything on this stretch stands:
| What | Where | Where it stands |
|---|---|---|
| Shake Shack | 2335 24th Ave. NW, SE corner of Rock Creek and 24th | Open since Oct. 28, 2026 |
| Young Family Athletic Center | Next to Shake Shack on 24th Ave. NW | Open, with courts, pools and pickleball |
| Chick-fil-A | SW corner of Rock Creek and 24th | $4.5 million permit application filed January 2026 |
| Rock Creek Entertainment District | North of Rock Creek Road near I-35 | Broke ground May 12, 2026; phased openings projected for 2028 |
Two of the four rows are about everyday errands, and those are the ones moving fastest. The arena row is the one in the headlines, and it's at least a year and a half from its first projected openings.
When your order helps a local nonprofit
Shake Shack is giving the corner a community side. On opening day, it pledged $1 to the Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma for every sandwich sold at the Norman store, and early guests got custom tumbler cups. It worked with the food bank at its Oklahoma City store too, and in Norman it plans donation days. On those dates, participating nonprofits receive 25% of sales proceeds, according to the Norman Transcript.
If you volunteer with a booster club, a youth team at YFAC or a church group in west Norman, that program is a way to raise money a couple of miles from home. The Transcript reports that nonprofits can partner with the Norman store directly.
